The People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba existed between 12 January and 26 April 1964 briefly as an independent state . Both Zanzibar and Pemba islands are off the coast of Tanzania where they are now part of together.

After a long colonial period under Portugal , Oman and the United Kingdom Zanzibar was on 10 December 1963, regardless of the latter as an independent Sultanate of Zanzibar .

On 12 January 1964, became the democratically elected government and the sultan was overthrown in a coup led by John Okello , a Ugandan . He created the People's Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba which quickly became a one-party state.

On April 26 , 1964 Zanzibar united with the Republic of Tanganyika on the African continent. Together they formed the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar . In October, the name was shortened to United Republic of Tanzania . Zanzibar still enjoys a wide autonomy in this country.
